ART 211: Male Affection

The article on male affection in the earlier 1800s was very intriguing, and brought to my knowledge something that I hadn't realized before. While I did know that the term and identity of homosexuality wasn't really brought to the forefront until the very early 20th century, it didn't occur to me how men might've behaved with each other previous to the differentiation of gay and straight. These photos showed the comfort and intimacy males held with each other in their friend groups. Touching was not something that they were scared to do; in fact, it was encouraged. Many of the portraits showed men sitting on each other's laps, holding hands, their faces very close together, or their hands on each others upper legs. There appeared to be limited boundaries. It's intriguing to see these poses because if those kinds of things were to occur in this day in age, those men would automatically be called gay. Men these days only share a brief hug if there is a reunion after a long time, or if something traumatic has happened. It's fascinating to see how times have changed.
